Chapter 8

The Mission, Top Secret Cobra

Walking by his barracks, Cameron saw a guy in karate clothes with a black belt.

“Wow, are you a Black Belt?” he asked.

“Yes, if you are interested, I study under a Goju-Ryu karate master at a dojo downtown. We meet every Monday through Saturday in the morning and afternoon. You should join us. Oh, and I’m Lieutenant Matheson by the way, nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too sir,” said Cameron. “So how do I get there?”

“After you get to the main gate, take a jeepny downtown. Get off at Main Street and follow the dirt road on the left until you see a big wood building with metal screens covering the windows about six blocks down. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.”

“Alright, see you there,” said Cameron as Lieutenant Matheson walked off.

The next day Cameron took a jeep, called a jeepny, to Main Street and walked to the karate school. Along the dirt road, he saw enormous pigs that the inner city people used as a garbage system. Inside he met Sensei Marshall, who looked like he stood 5 feet 7 inches and weighed about 140 pounds. He also noticed that Marshall was a fourth-degree black belt. Cameron couldn’t wait to start learning from him and began his lessons twice a day to improve his abilities.

Every day when Cameron arrived back at the barracks, he saw his roommate Roy lifting weights or jumping rope. “I don’t think you can get any bigger, Roy,” Cameron joked.

“I am training to win, I want to be the best!” Roy said hungrily.

“You already are, you won all the boxing matches on base.”

“I only have three months to train for the air force base championship, I’m going to do whatever it takes.”

After three months Roy easily won the base boxing championship. Later, he was declared the All Air Force Boxing Champion. Nobody could touch Roy. His sledgehammer arms would break anyone’s jaw on impact. He knocked down his competitors like they were toys. When he wasn’t fighting he read the Bible or wrote home to his wife and son. Cameron admired Roy, as he trained like there would be no tomorrow. Roy wanted to be the boxing champion of all branches of the service, the United States All-Military Heavyweight Boxing Champion. He planned to leave the service in six months and launch his career as a professional fighter. He just needed one, maybe two professional pay-days to provide for his family back home. Boxing was Roy’s exodus from poverty and he trained hard. He was not going to be denied as he focused on winning the US championship fight in Japan coming up in two months.

One day, Cameron ventured out downtown on his own to see if he could find a bar to get a drink of beer. He saw a sign hanging above a door in Angeles City that read “Whites Only.” As he walked further into the city he noticed that there were no integrated bars in town.
